The Need for Yoga in the 21st Century

While modern science has
brought us to the brink of a nuclear war, the Yoga-Vidya
(the Science of Yoga) on the other hand brings about
peace, harmony, love, friendliness and
cooperation .

According to the Indian cosmic view, humanity is
currently in the age of Kali Yuga, the last era of the
great cycle of time. This is the period where
technological and societal advancements are at their
highest; where decadence, disharmony, conflict and
destruction prevail; and the morality and spiritual
awareness of mankind is at an all-time low. One
needn't look far to surmise the accuracy of this
conception. A quick glance at the daily news or CNN.com
reveals a world in a downward spiralling state of
disharmony, destruction and dismay. The "American
Dream", an ideal that is now spreading like wildfire
across the globe, is ever-more revealing itself as a
"nightmare" of sorts. Science, the "saviour of mankind",
has failed to bring health, happiness and harmony to the
people of the world. More-over, it has not even begun to
approach answers to the deeper questions of life, like
who are we?where did we come from?why are we here? and where are we
going? In an age where material affluence and
technical developments are at their all-time highest -
disease, depression, aggression, the division of wealth,
global impoverishment and environmental destruction are
also at their worst. People are suffering around the
globe in unprecedented proportions, while in the
affluent Western nations, a rapidly growing number of
disillusioned people are now experiencing an existential
crisis of historic proportions. What is needed,
perhaps now more than ever in this world, is wisdom. One
who understands the innately Divine nature of all
people, ceases to be in conflict with those around them.
One who realizes the interconnectedness of all life no
longer destroys their natural environment. One who knows
the truths of existence knows that their own health and
happiness also depends on the health and happiness of
each and every one of their fellow Human Beings, and
naturally lives in harmony with those around them. As
Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani states: The Yogi wishes peace and happiness not
only for himself, but also for all Beings. He is not an
'individualist' seeking salvation for only himself but
on the contrary is an 'universalist' seeking to live
life in the proper evolutionary manner to the best of
his ability and with care and concern for his human
brethren as well as all Beings. Now, more than ever, the world needs Yoga.
We are unhealthy. We need health. We are unhappy.
We need peace. We are unsettled. We need
harmony. Yoga brings these very things and so much
more. All that it takes to know Yoga is a real desire
for change and a genuine ambition to grow
both individually and collectively. When we are ready as
societies, as cultures, and as a species to embrace the
transformative wisdom of this ancient and most profound
Science of Life, then we all will once again re-gain our
birth-right of health, happiness and ever-lasting
prosperity.
